Samurai (jap. 侍 ) is the common term in the West for a member of the Warrior Stand in pre-industrial Japan. Today, samurai is used only for the warrior’s needle of that time. Samurai, who had become menless, were called Rōnin. Originally the samurai were only soldiers in the service of the emperor and the nobility. With the rise of the Shogunate and the ensuing establishment of a military aristocracy, however, the samurai rose to the ruling class.
